Last week I left Israel for fifty-eight hours. Accompanied by my husband,
we went on a journey to see my father’s childhood home in Jesberg, Germany.
There were many emotions surrounding this trip but, in the end, I was thankful I
had done it.
Before leaving Frankfurt for Jesberg, we prayed at the above synagogue. Not
pictured is the security hut with the word police written in German across it.
What can be seen are the barriers making it impossible for any vehicle to get
close to the building. Those, along with the “Bring Them Home” banner, reminded
us that anti-Semitism is alive and well all over the world.
Inside the synagogue there were about thirty worshippers. Not bad for a
weekday minyan, especially remembering how Frankfurt treated its Jews nine
decades earlier.
They wanted to destroy us. We’re still here. And we’ll continue to survive and
flourish despite Hamas, ICJ, Ireland, Spain, Norway, and all the others consumed
with irrational hate.
