The Best Birthday Present

Every day I send a message to my son and son-in-law in Gaza. I know they don’t have their phones with them, but I also know that when they get out of Gaza, they can see I was thinking of them. Friday morning, I wrote my son-in-law how excited I was that his family was coming for Shabbat and wished that he could come too.
Well, as we were in the middle of our Shabbat meal Friday night the door opened and in he walked. Imagine the excitement-the tears, the hugs, the kisses. It was wonderful to be able to sit with him and converse with him in a calm atmosphere. He spoke about the attack the proceeding Shabbat, shared some stories, assured us the war was moving in a positive direction and, even though the soldiers have experienced some very difficult situations, they have not lost their conviction to continue defending their people.
Since he grew up in Shilo, right across the street from us, there were many people our son-in-law wanted to see. The most important after his wife and children were, of course, his parents. He and my daughter crossed the road, knocked on the door, and my daughter entered alone.
“I want to wish you mazel tov,” she told her father-in-law as it was his birthday. “I have a surprise for you.”
In walked her husband. The best surprise any father could have.
Now our son-in-law is back in Gaza. Our prayers are with him and all our soldiers. Oh, HaShem, let them all come home, safe and whole, for good.
