Let Ron Go!

In the beginning of this week’s Torah portion Moshe warns Pharoh of the upcoming plague of locusts if he will not let the Children of Israel go. Pharoh’s servants remonstrate with their king saying (Shemot, Chapter 10, verse 7) How long will this be a snare for us? Send out the men that they may serve HaShem, their G-d! Do you not yet know that Egypt is lost? To me, this scenario is a mirror of current events. For 834 days we have made the same demand to Hamas: Let My People Go: Don’t you know Gaza is in ruins. Like Pharoh, Hamas did not listen and they have no one to blame for the destruction besides themselves. And it’s not over. Ron Gvili is still there. Send him home, Hamas! Bring peace to the region! Now!

Emunah, faith in God, does not mean believing only good things will happen; it means believing that whatever God does is for the best. I wrote these words at a time when drive-by shootings and suicide bombers had become almost weekly, if not daily, tragedies. Now, more than ten years later, the words are no less true.
